In order for an invention to be patentable it must comply with certain standards. It must be novel, that is to say that some aspect of it must be new. It must show utility or usefulness. It must not be obvious to others. An idea cannot be patented if it was made known to the public or secretly applied before the application date. It is important for the patentee to carry out a search regarding the novelty of the invention before the application for a provisional patent.
