Patents in South Africa are granted by CIPRO (The Companies and Intellectual Property Registration Office). Their offices are located at 77 Meintjies Street, Sunnyside in Pretoria.
CIPRO is a division of the Department of Trade and Industry and is the office responsible for the Registration of Companies and Close Corporations, and the Registration of Copyrights, Designs, Patents and Trade Marks.
If you have an invention that you wish to patent, it is to CIPRO that you must apply. In terms of the Patents Act, individuals may apply to CIPRO for a provisional local patent at a cost of R60.
A patent application is better made through a Patent Attorney as the application can involve a complicated legal procedure.
