Copyright Transfer
February 20, 2009
Intellectual Property News and Interesting Facts
In order to publish and market the writings of an author, the publisher will set up an agreement which entails copyright transfer in part or completely to the publisher.
It is important to read the agreement carefully as you even though you are the original author may very well find yourself at the other end of a lawsuit regarding copyright infringement.
Other instances where copyright transfer will take place through agreements are between a freelance writer and a website owner or a ghostwriter of a book and the person who commissioned it.
These are but two examples of copyright transfer that can take place. Exclusive copyright transfer must be done through a written agreement whereas partial transfer can be done orally.
Before signing away the rights to your work through a copyright transfer agreement, contact the Intellectual Property attorneys of SVW to help you set up an agreement that will protect you and your income.
