In 1963 Mr Douglas Engelbart invented the first computer mouse. The mouse was large and bulky and used two gear-wheels perpendicular to each other.

Mr Douglas Engelbart received his patent in November 1970 for an “X-Y Position Indicator for a Display System“. He visualized that users would hold the mouse in one hand and type on a five-key chord keyset with the other. .

Mr Douglas Engelbart never received any royalties for his invention, as his patent ran out before his invention became widely used in personal computers.

The builder of Mr Engelbart’s original mouse, Mr Bill English, invented the ball mouse in 1972 while working for Xerox PARC. It came as part of the hardware package of the Xerox Alto computer.
