Intellectual Property News and Interesting Facts

Numerous areas of the life sciences fall under patent protection laws. Most often scientists are unaware of the exact scope of patent protection.

A short list of life sciences which can qualify for patent protection is provided below:

  • Genetic engineering – includes isolated DNA sequences
  • Plant and animal sciences – include genetic modified plants
  • Diagnostic – includes primers used for diagnostic testing
  • Medical sciences – instruments and diagnosis may qualify for patent protection
  • Pharmaceutical and chemical – specific new and thus novel chemical compounds and pharmaceutical compounds can qualify for patent protection.

It should be noted that more areas are included under the above categories and as such the pre-conditions to qualify for patent protection should also be considered.
