Wessel is a qualified electronic engineer, an Attorney of the High Court, and a registered patent attorney. Wessel specializes in patents in the fields of information systems, telecommunications, and computer-based inventions, and has more than a decade's worth of experience in the weapons industry, both in programming and in a managerial capacity.
Previously, Wessel was in charge of procuring, negotiating, and settling of international contracts for a division of a large weapons manufacturer in South Africa. Wessel is a director of Smit & Van Wyk, Inc. |

Stefan graduated from the University of Pretoria with a Master's degree in Computer Engineering (data security) in 2001 and started his career in intellectual property in the patent department of a large South African intellectual property firm.
In 2005 Stefan accepted an offer to study towards a PhD at the Vienna University of Technology, and was subsequently invited to continue his studies of Complex Network Control Systems under supervision of the Canada Research Chair in Information Technology. His recent publications include peer-reviewed keynote papers in both Europe and North America. |

Carel holds a Master's degree in the bio-sciences, is an Attorney of the High Court, and a registered patent attorney. He specializes in patents in the fields of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals and takes a particular interest in academic research in these fields in South Africa.
Carel often works closely with academic researchers, para-statal institutions and biotech start-ups in identifying potentially valuable inventions, as intervention is sometimes required to highlight potentially valuable intellectual property which resides in such institutions. Carel relocated to Australia in 2008, where he is practicing with Wrays, through which he is still available to Smit & Van Wyk, Inc. on a consultancy basis. |
