Brand Names

Development of a Trademark

A need to mark manufactured items in a way that would distinguish the products from that of competitors has lead to the development of brand names in the form of wording and symbols.

In contemporary society brand names are not only used as distinguishable marks, but also as selling tools used strategically for the establishment of companies as leaders in the market. The distinguishable words, logos and symbols have become assets and protecting these assets has also become an important task.

Enterprises shipped their goods to countries around the world and needed branding to distinguish their goods from competitors. They needed to instil confidence in their products with consumers in far away countries.

The consumers relied on the markings to recognize the goods of the manufacturers known for quality. Branding became a tool to help exporters compete with the local manufacturers in those countries. Some of the earliest brands are that of Coke and Kellogg’s still well-known today.

International trade in the 19th century necessitated clear marking to indicate who the manufacturer was as mass production of consumer goods developed.

The company Pears known for soap manufacturing was the first to register a trademark.

The first advertisement explaining brand names appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. Companies thereafter developed slogans and trademarks. Branding as a commercial and relationship building tool was firmly established by 1950.

Today, companies spend millions in developing and protecting their trademarks because of the value associated with branding.
