Logo Copyright

Aspects of Logo Copyright

Although logos of companies are normally protected under trademark laws when registered as trademarks, if the logo contains not only a name, but a combination of for instance, words and design, it can be seen as an original artistic work. Since copyright protects artistic works, logo copyrights can exist.  You will not however, have to register logo copyrights as such will automatically be assigned.

You will not however, be able to get logo copyrights simply for a company name. The name in itself already has some form of protection once registered with CIPRO. It is however, important to note that someone may for instance, decide that you have a stunning company logo, and that it would look great on their website. To prevent them from copying the logo and using it on their website, you can take specific steps.

One is to ensure that you embed an invisible watermark in your logo through the use of a program that ads an identification number. The second is to disable right click through a script. This will make it difficult, although not impossible to right click and copy the image. You can also disable SAVE AS to prevent the person from saving the image. The third step is to include a message through a script that warns that copying the image is not allowed and that you have copyright ownership of it. The copyright symbol can be added, together with the date, and your company name.

Although trademark registration of the logo will certainly add more value to the logo, help with branding and preventing copying, you can rest assured that logo copyrights automatically protect your company logo from being stolen and used on the Internet.
