Estimates of International Trademark Costs
Normally in South Africa, trademark costs cover the initial ten years of protection, and thereafter a renewal fee for every ten years becomes payable.
It should be noted that the trademark costs listed at the various trademark offices of countries, including South Africa, do not include the legal fees of the attorneys and translations.
Although trademark costs for a local filing are rather low, the costs of international trademark applications vary according to the country and area covered as well as the classes in which the trademark is registered.
The costs for filing in ARIPO countries are estimated for one mark application in one state at around $2400 and for additional member countries the cost will be around $250 per country extra.
Additional marks or classes covered for one state filed at the same time will be around $1700-1900. Assignment costs vary from $600 for one to eight countries for the first mark and an additional $300 for every additional mark filed at the same time.
The costs mentioned do not include filing costs, translation, and advertisement costs of the trademark application.
ARIPO is just one international convention, there are numerous others making it easier to make one filing rather than having to apply on national level at each country.
The trademark attorneys of Smit & Van Wyk will discuss costs for local and international filings including a breakdown of expenses with you before proceeding with any steps.
The above costs are mere estimates as costs change and it is thus difficult to provide an exact amount that will be accurate on a website. We do, however, provide the cost estimate when speaking to the client.
The first step in registering a trademark is to begin locally. The next countries can then be discussed and the trademark costs for each determined. Contact us for a complete quote on trademark registration today.
