The WISA Mine Water Division invites you to the Annual Symposium that takes place from 9 – 11 November 2016 at the CSIR ICC in Pretoria. The symposium theme for 2016 is: Management Options for Mine Water.

Symposium speakers will include Nobel Peace Prize winner Prof. Coleen Vogel of the University of the Witwatersand, Mr Douglas Lake of Anglo American Thermal Coal, Ms Zanele Maphumulo of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Mr Kent Thornycroft of Kumba Iron Ore, and Ms Ritva Mühlbauer of Anglo American, just to name a few.

The symposium is packed with interesting developments and perspectives on water risk and management options in mining: Water Risk and Regulation, Water Technology, Water Use, Water Discharges, Water and Society.

Event Highlights

The Serious Water Game will be played and demonstrated in the symposium. There will be free fast WiFi in the venue, so bring your Windows OS laptop or tablet if you would like to join in!

Aqua Republica – the serious (water) game – was developed in collaboration with the UNEP-DHI Centre, and it served as the basis for the 2014 South Africa Water Game Challenge.

The presentations will mainly be given by professionals operating within the mining sector as well as a selection of students focused on mine water. Presentations will be made available electronically to all attendees and you can earn 2 CPD points for full attendance.

Half-day Post-symposium Events (Friday 11 November):
Site visit to a mine water treatment facility at New Vaal Colliery, or;
Mine Water Division training course Understanding Mine Drainage.
